Psycho-Educational Assessment

Psycho-Educational Assessment

Is your child struggling with focus, task completion, or having difficulty with reading, writing, or math skill development? Challenges with attention/focus, language comprehension or expression, visual spatial processing, memory, processing speed or other areas may be making learning more difficult or time-consuming than expected. Parents and teachers often recognize these difficulties in children early on and need additional information to assist them in providing the best supports available. In other instances, older adolescents or adults have struggled throughout their schooling and want to determine whether a formal diagnosis of a Specific Learning Disorder in Reading (or Dyslexia), Math, or Written Expression or ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) may be appropriate and can explain their ongoing struggles. Identification of specific learning needs is essential in determining the most appropriate strategies, supports, interventions, and accommodations to achieve to one's potential.

Psycho-educational Assessment involves the administration of standardized assessment instruments (also referred to as testing), as well as interviews, observations, review of relevant records and/or reports, rating scales completed by parents and teachers, and consultation. Assessments are completed to provide comprehensive information about an individual’s strengths, areas of need, and recommendations for academic, socio-emotional, and behavioural interventions. Determining a child's comprehensive profile helps identify the need for special services and/or supports within a school or post-secondary setting.

Are there other types of Psychological Assessment?

In addition to psycho-educational assessment, various other types of assessments are offered:

Socio-emotional / Behavioural Assessment

When socio-emotional and/or behavioural concerns, such as, anxiety issues, depression/mood-related, adjustment difficulties, oppositional behaviour, impulse control, conduct problems) are evident in the home, school, and/or community settings, it may be appropriate to pursue an assessment to determine whether a diagnosis may be appropriate to best inform parent strategies, teaching strategies, interventions, and/or programming supports.

Giftedness Assessment

At times it may be important to determine whether a child meets the criteria for Giftedness to assist in enriching their programming to provide the appropriate intellectual and academic stimulation and to alleviate boredom. At times, specialized programming for Gifted students may be beneficial and Giftedness assessments can determine eligibility for such programs.

Developmental Assessment

There are times when younger children may benefit from developmental assessment to identify domains of development that may be “delayed” to assist in accessing early intervention. Decisions around preschool/Kindergarten programming may also be informed/supported through this process.

Post-secondary Assessment

If you are a post-secondary student and are having difficulty keeping up with coursework, completing assignments, tests, or exams on time, or challenges focussing on or processing the information presented in lectures, you may benefit from a psycho-educational assessment. Perhaps you have always struggled with your learning to some extent but have never received a formal assessment/diagnosis to allow you to receive the appropriate supports and accommodations. If so, you may benefit from a psycho-educational assessment to identify and document your specific strengths and areas of challenge to allow access to the supports you need to support your diagnosis (e.g., Learning Disability or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), such as extended time, use of adaptive technology, a quiet space away from others during exams, and/or copied lecture notes. The Canada Student Grants program may cover a significant portion of this cost. You may check to determine whether you are eligible for this program by clicking the following link: https://studentaid.alberta.ca/media/2885/grant-post-secondary-students-permanent-disabilities-schedule4.pdf

Career Assessment

Career assessment can include assessment of aptitude, interests, and personality. At certain times in life, individuals may benefit from career assessment to assist in making career choices/changes and pursuing upgrading or additional training in an area more suited to them. This process can assist with making a more informed decision.

When our relationships with others are fraught with negativity and/or conflict, this can be very stressful and detrimental to our psychological and physical well-being. Whether the relationship issues are between partners/spouses, parent-child, siblings, friends, or other family members, improvements can be made to communication patterns and connection rituals to improve our attachment relationships. We need each other now more than ever!

4) Online Counselling

If in-person services are challenging for you due to work/school schedules and/or transportation issues, online counselling services may be appropriate. You must live in Alberta in order to access this service. This service is appropriate for a range of issues but may not be appropriate in some instances which can be discussed during your initial inquiry.
